Our Ingredients

The best chocolate starts with the finest ingredients. That’s why Munson’s uses only the freshest, highest quality ingredients in our confections – and that’s why our chocolates have been winning awards and stealing hearts for more than 70 years.

Local Ingredients, Small Batch Craftsmanship

What goes into every confection we make? Simple: A lot of time, a lot of love, and the finest local ingredients. We’re passionate about our community, so whenever possible, we source raw materials from other Connecticut companies. All of our milk, butter and cream is purchased from a small family farm just down the road from our headquarters in Bolton.

As a small batch chocolatier, we can control the quality and freshness throughout the cooking process. This technique takes a bit more time – but we think the results are worth it.

Chocolate Sustainability

Munson’s Chocolates is wholey committed to demanding high ethical stands in all we do. Over our nearly 8 decades in business, Munson’s Chocolates has always recognized and prioritized sustainability and that is especially true when it comes to the sourcing of beans used to make its blend of chocolate. Note: While the specific origin of the beans used to make our blend is proprietary and varies by type, they are primarily from West Africa and Indonesia. Our commitment: Munson’s Chocolates is committed to three sustainability goals when it comes to the sourcing of our cocoa beans and the Farm to Consumer supply chain

  • Farmer Livelihoods: Championing the professional cocoa farming practices, to strengthen the socio-economic resilience of cocoa farmers and their communities. Farmers are empowered to become true entrepreneurs who maximize their farms as a business, contributing to their prosperity.
  • Community Wellbeing: To enhance the safety and well-being of children and families in cocoa farming areas. Together with our partners, we support community-driven initiatives to prevent child labor, enhance women’s economic opportunities, increases access to quality education and improves health and nutrition.
  • Protect our planet: Our partners promote environmental best practices in the harvesting of our cocoa beans and in the production of our chocolate. This includes: balancing cocoa production with the conservation of forests to ease the impact of climate change on cocoa farmers’ livelihoods. It also includes; reducing the emissions of greenhouse gas (GHG), the development of climate-resilient farming practices, water conservation and access to clean water.

Too Good To Waste

To reduce our environmental impact, we strive to repurpose all scrap generated during the process of manufacturing our confections. Each day, nut pieces, broken pretzels, caramel edges, and other “scrap” are drenched in chocolate and sold at a reduced price as factory seconds. We call it a “Munson Mash-Up” – our customers call it delicious.

Items that are unable to be repurposed are donated within our community.
